CKAD: The Developer's Kubernetes Certification
While CKA proves you can administer Kubernetes, CKAD proves you can build applications that run well on it. If you're a developer who deploys to Kubernetes — or wants to — CKAD validates the skills that matter: designing, building, configuring, and exposing cloud-native applications.
CKA vs CKAD: Which Should You Take?
| Aspect | CKA | CKAD |
|---|---|---|
| Target | Administrators, SREs, platform engineers | Application developers |
| Focus | Cluster ops, upgrades, etcd, RBAC | Application design, deployment, debugging |
| Duration | 2 hours | 2 hours |
| Passing | 66% | 66% |
| Overlap | ~40% overlap in workloads, services, and troubleshooting | |
Recommendation: If you're a developer, start with CKAD. If you manage clusters, start with CKA. If you do both, CKA first — it covers more foundational concepts.
CKAD Curriculum Domains
20% — Application Design and Build
- Define, build, and modify container images
- Choose and use the right workload resource (Deployment, Job, CronJob, etc.)
- Understand multi-container Pod design patterns (sidecar, init container, adapter, ambassador)
- Utilise persistent and ephemeral volumes
20% — Application Deployment
- Use Kubernetes primitives to implement common deployment strategies (blue-green, canary)
- Understand Deployments and how to perform rolling updates and rollbacks
- Use the Helm package manager to deploy existing packages
- Kustomize for configuration management
15% — Application Observability and Maintenance
- Understand API deprecations
- Implement probes and health checks (liveness, readiness, startup)
- Use built-in CLI tools to monitor Kubernetes applications
- Utilise container logs
- Debugging in Kubernetes
25% — Application Environment, Configuration and Security
- Discover and use resources that extend Kubernetes (CRDs, operators)
- Understand authentication, authorisation, and admission control
- Understand requests, limits, and quotas
- ConfigMaps and Secrets
- SecurityContexts and pod security
- ServiceAccounts
20% — Services & Networking
- Demonstrate basic understanding of NetworkPolicies
- Provide and troubleshoot access to applications via services
- Use Ingress rules to expose applications

View on Amazon →6-Week Study Plan
- Weeks 1-2: Application design and build. Master Dockerfiles, multi-container patterns, and workload resources.
- Weeks 3-4: Deployment strategies + environment/config/security. Practice Helm, Kustomize, RBAC, SecurityContexts.
- Weeks 5-6: Networking + observability + practice exams. Use killer.sh for exam simulation.
Speed is critical: CKAD has more questions per hour than CKA. Practice until you can create a Deployment with probes, resource limits, and a service in under 5 minutes.
From CKAD to Cloud-Native Developer
CKAD proves you can build on Kubernetes. To be effective in enterprise environments, extend into:
- GitOps workflows — ArgoCD/Flux for deployment automation
- Service mesh — Istio or Cilium for advanced traffic management
- Observability — OpenTelemetry instrumentation, distributed tracing
- Security — Supply chain security, image scanning, pod security standards
- AI/ML on Kubernetes — KServe, Ray, KubeFlow for ML workloads
