Platform engineering exists because Kubernetes is too complex for application developers to operate directly. A raw Kubernetes cluster is a construction site — powerful but dangerous. An internal developer platform (IDP) is a finished building with working elevators and fire exits. Golden paths are the well-lit corridors that guide developers to the right outcomes without blocking creative exits.
What Makes a Golden Path
A golden path is the default, supported, recommended way to accomplish a task on your platform. It's not the only way — developers can go off-path — but it's the path with guardrails, documentation, automation, and support. Characteristics:
- Opinionated — Makes decisions so developers don't have to. Language-specific build packs. Default resource limits. Standard observability configuration.
- Self-service — Developers can provision and deploy without tickets or platform team involvement
- Observable — Built-in metrics, logging, and tracing. Developers get dashboards automatically.
- Compliant by default — Security policies, network policies, and compliance controls baked in
- Documented — Clear "getting started" guides. API references. Troubleshooting guides.
Architecture Components
Developer Portal (Backstage)
Backstage is the front door to your platform. It provides a service catalog (what exists), software templates (how to create new things), documentation (how things work), and plugin integrations (what tools are available). Deploy it on your Kubernetes cluster and configure it as the single entry point for all platform interactions.
Software Templates
Templates are the core of golden paths. A template defines: repository structure, CI/CD pipeline, Kubernetes manifests, observability configuration, and security policies. When a developer creates a new service from a template, they get a working, deployable, observable service in minutes — not days.
GitOps Deployment
ArgoCD manages deployments. Developers push code, CI builds and tests, the pipeline updates the GitOps repository, ArgoCD reconciles the cluster state. Developers never run kubectl commands. They never write Kubernetes manifests by hand (unless they want to). The golden path abstracts Kubernetes complexity.
Crossplane for Infrastructure
When services need cloud resources (databases, queues, object storage), Crossplane provides Kubernetes-native provisioning. Developers request resources through familiar YAML. The platform team defines compositions that enforce standards: encryption, backup policies, network placement, tagging.

Watch on Skillshare →Guardrails, Not Gates
The difference between platform engineering and traditional IT gatekeeping:
- Gate: "Submit a ticket to get a namespace." Guardrail: "Create a namespace via the self-service portal; it automatically gets resource quotas, network policies, and monitoring."
- Gate: "Security review before deployment." Guardrail: "OPA policies block non-compliant deployments at admission; compliant deployments flow automatically."
- Gate: "Request firewall rules." Guardrail: "Network policies are generated from service mesh configuration; services declare their dependencies."
Measuring Platform Success
Track: time from code commit to production (deployment frequency), time from new service idea to first deployment (lead time), developer satisfaction (NPS surveys), platform adoption rate (percentage of services using golden paths), and incident rate for on-path vs off-path services.

We build internal developer platforms on Kubernetes with golden paths that engineers actually want to use. Backstage, ArgoCD, Crossplane, OPA — assembled into a coherent platform that accelerates delivery while maintaining governance.
