Structural Battery Composites: The Emerging Technology Combining Structure and Energy Storage

WEF lists structural battery composites as a top emerging technology. Materials that serve as both load-bearing structure and energy storage could transform vehicles, aircraft, and devices.

The World Economic Forum includes structural battery composites in its top emerging technologies list. The concept is elegant: materials that simultaneously serve as load-bearing structure and energy storage. Instead of adding heavy batteries to a vehicle, the body panels themselves store energy. Instead of a laptop with a battery compartment, the chassis is the battery.

How Structural Batteries Work

  • Carbon fiber electrodes: Carbon fiber — already used as a structural material in aerospace and automotive — can function as a battery electrode, storing lithium ions
  • Solid-state electrolyte: Structural electrolytes that are both ionically conductive (enabling battery function) and mechanically stiff (providing structural support)
  • Multi-functional composites: Layered materials where some layers provide mechanical strength and others provide electrochemical energy storage

Why It Matters

Weight Is Everything

  • Electric vehicles: Battery packs are 30-40% of an EV's weight. If the vehicle structure itself stores energy, range increases dramatically without adding weight.
  • Aircraft: Weight reduction in aviation has enormous impact on fuel efficiency and range. Structural batteries could enable longer-range electric aircraft.
  • Satellites and space: Every gram matters. Structural batteries reduce satellite mass, enabling more payload or longer missions.
  • Consumer electronics: Devices could be thinner and lighter while maintaining or increasing battery life
  • Drones: Extended flight time without adding weight — directly enabling more commercial drone applications

Current State and Challenges

  • Energy density: Current structural batteries store significantly less energy per kilogram than dedicated lithium-ion batteries. The tradeoff is that the weight savings from eliminating separate batteries can compensate.
  • Mechanical properties: Structural battery composites don't yet match the mechanical performance of dedicated structural materials. Balancing energy storage and structural performance is an active research area.
  • Manufacturing: Production processes for structural batteries are not yet scalable. Moving from lab demonstrations to industrial manufacturing is the key challenge.
  • Safety: Structural components that also contain energy storage must meet both mechanical safety and battery safety requirements simultaneously.
  • Lifecycle: Battery degradation affects structural integrity over time. Understanding long-term behavior is critical for safety-critical applications.

Enterprise Relevance

For technology leaders, structural batteries are relevant in two ways:

  • Supply chain and product impact: If your business manufactures vehicles, aircraft, devices, or IoT sensors, structural batteries could fundamentally change product architecture in the 2028-2032 timeframe
  • AI and simulation opportunity: Designing structural batteries requires advanced materials simulation — molecular dynamics, finite element analysis, and AI-accelerated materials discovery. Organizations with AI compute infrastructure and materials science capabilities are well-positioned.
