C5 vs ISO 27001 vs SOC 2 for AI Platforms

When C5, ISO 27001, and SOC 2 matter for AI platforms, how they differ, and how to position them for German and European enterprise buyers.

Luca Berton8 min read

C5, ISO 27001, and SOC 2 are often mentioned in the same procurement conversation, but they are not interchangeable. For AI platform teams, the practical question is which assurance signal the buyer needs and which controls your architecture can actually prove.

How They Differ

  • C5: cloud-focused assurance used heavily in Germany and European cloud procurement
  • ISO 27001: information security management system certification across organizational security processes
  • SOC 2: assurance report often used by SaaS buyers, especially for security, availability, confidentiality, processing integrity, and privacy trust criteria

Where C5 Is Strong for AI Platforms

C5 is especially useful when the buyer asks how the cloud service is operated, where responsibilities sit, and whether infrastructure, operations, logging, and provider controls are demonstrable. For AI agents, that makes it relevant to model gateways, vector databases, cloud-hosted runtimes, identity integrations, and observability.

Where ISO 27001 Helps

ISO 27001 helps prove that the organization has a managed security programme: risk management, policies, internal audits, corrective actions, asset management, access control, supplier management, and continual improvement. It is broader than one AI platform.

Where SOC 2 Helps

SOC 2 is often procurement-friendly for SaaS, especially outside Germany. It is strong when buyers want an auditor's report on operating effectiveness over a period. For AI platforms, SOC 2 evidence should still include AI-specific controls around prompts, data handling, model providers, and tool access.

Positioning for Buyers

Practical Guidance

  • German cloud buyer: expect C5 questions early
  • Enterprise security team: expect ISO 27001 and risk-management questions
  • SaaS procurement: expect SOC 2 and data processing questions
  • Regulated AI workload: expect all three to be mapped to concrete AI controls

Bottom Line

For AI platforms, assurance reports are only useful if they map to the workload. C5, ISO 27001, and SOC 2 can all help, but none of them replaces explicit controls for identity, RAG authorization, model logging, provider risk, and agent tool execution.
