The CRA requires SBOMs for every product with digital elements. Running syft once generates a file. But CRA compliance at scale requires SBOM infrastructure — generation, storage, analysis, and lifecycle management across your entire product portfolio.
SBOM Lifecycle Management
- Generation — Automated SBOM creation at every build, not just release. Every artifact has a corresponding SBOM
- Storage — Versioned SBOM repository linked to product versions and deployment records
- Analysis — Continuous correlation of SBOM components against vulnerability databases
- Distribution — Automated sharing with downstream customers, importers, and authorities on request
- Lifecycle updates — SBOMs updated when dependencies change, patches applied, or components replaced
The Architecture
Build-Time Integration
Every CI/CD pipeline includes SBOM generation as a mandatory step. Use Syft, cdxgen, or Trivy depending on your language ecosystem. Output in CycloneDX format (best security tooling support). Store as a build artifact alongside the product binary.
SBOM Management Platform
Dependency-Track (OWASP) serves as the central SBOM management platform. It ingests SBOMs from all pipelines, continuously monitors components against NVD/OSV, calculates risk scores, and provides API access for downstream consumers.
Vulnerability Correlation Engine
When a new CVE is published, automatically identify which products are affected by querying the SBOM database. Generate impact reports and trigger the vulnerability management workflow. This turns a manual "which products use Log4j?" panic into an automated 5-minute query.

Watch on Skillshare →Scale Considerations
At 50+ products with weekly builds, you're managing thousands of SBOMs. Without infrastructure, this drowns your team. With infrastructure, it's automated background work that generates compliance evidence as a byproduct of normal development.
