C5 and the AI Act: Where Cloud Controls Meet AI Governance

How C5-style cloud controls can support EU AI Act governance for regulated AI systems through logging, cybersecurity, data governance, provider management, and documentation.

Luca Berton8 min read

The EU AI Act and C5 address different layers. The AI Act focuses on AI system governance, risk, transparency, oversight, documentation, robustness, and cybersecurity. C5 focuses on cloud service controls and assurance. For cloud-hosted AI platforms, the two meet in the engineering evidence.

Where They Overlap

  • Logging: AI governance needs traceability; C5-oriented operations need auditable events
  • Cybersecurity: AI systems need protection against misuse, compromise, and service disruption
  • Data governance: source data, RAG indexes, prompts, and logs need lifecycle control
  • Provider management: model, cloud, identity, and data providers need risk review
  • Documentation: AI system documentation depends on accurate infrastructure and process evidence

Practical Control Bridge

Use C5-style evidence to support AI Act governance files: architecture diagrams, model gateway controls, access-control logs, retrieval authorization, incident records, provider due diligence, monitoring dashboards, and change history for prompts and policies.

Do Not Collapse Them

C5 does not prove AI Act compliance by itself. It supports the cloud and operational control layer. You still need AI-specific work: risk classification, intended purpose, human oversight design, model evaluation, transparency notices, and post-market monitoring where applicable.

Bottom Line

C5 can make AI Act governance more defensible by producing operational evidence. Treat it as the infrastructure control layer underneath the AI governance programme, not as a replacement for AI Act analysis.
