C5 Control Mapping for AI Agent Platforms

Map C5-style cloud control expectations to GenAI platform components: identity, model gateway, RAG, tool execution, logging, secrets, and incident response.

Luca Berton8 min read

C5 becomes useful for AI agent platforms when you translate control language into engineering ownership. The control is not "secure the AI." The control is authentication, authorization, logging, change management, vulnerability handling, backup, deletion, provider management, and incident response across the actual GenAI stack.

This mapping gives platform and security teams a practical starting point.

Platform Components to Map

  • Identity layer: SSO, MFA, user lifecycle, administrator roles, token issuance
  • Agent runtime: orchestration, tool routing, approval workflows, guardrails
  • Model gateway: provider routing, prompt templates, safety filters, request logging
  • RAG data plane: document stores, vector databases, embeddings, retrieval filters
  • Tool integrations: SaaS APIs, internal APIs, webhooks, write-capable systems
  • Operations layer: monitoring, incident response, vulnerability management, backups

Control Map

C5-Style Control Areas

  • Access control: Auth0 login, scoped tokens, FGA checks, privileged access reviews
  • Asset management: inventory of models, tools, datasets, indexes, cloud services, and providers
  • Operations: deployment controls, monitoring, alerting, runbooks, recovery procedures
  • Change management: approval and versioning for prompts, policies, tools, models, and retrieval pipelines
  • Security monitoring: denied actions, anomalous tool calls, prompt injection signals, data access spikes
  • Provider management: due diligence for cloud, identity, model, vector database, and SaaS tool providers

What Good Looks Like

Each control should have an owner, implementation mechanism, evidence source, review cadence, and failure procedure. For example, document-level RAG authorization should name the data owner, FGA model, retrieval filter, denied-access logs, quarterly access review, and incident playbook for unauthorized retrieval.

Bottom Line

C5 control mapping for AI agents is the bridge between audit language and platform engineering. If a control cannot be tied to a system, owner, log, or review, it is not yet operational.
