RAG turns enterprise documents into model context. From a C5 perspective, that creates a cloud data control problem: what was indexed, who approved it, where it is stored, who can retrieve it, how it is protected, and how it is deleted.
The vector database is not just a search component. It is part of the regulated data plane.
Control the Indexing Pipeline
Start before data reaches the vector store:
- Source inventory: list systems that feed the RAG pipeline
- Data classification: label documents before chunking and embedding
- Approval workflow: require data owner approval for sensitive collections
- Transformation records: track chunking, embedding model, pipeline version, and timestamp
- Access metadata: preserve document ownership, tenant, group, project, and confidentiality labels
Enforce Retrieval Authorization
Vector similarity is not permission. Retrieve candidate chunks, then enforce authorization before context assembly. If the user cannot read the source document, the model should not receive the chunk.

Watch on Skillshare →Protect Embeddings and Context
- Encrypt vector stores, metadata databases, backups, and exported evaluation datasets
- Restrict administrator access to indexes and retrieval logs
- Separate tenants or sensitive domains when policy requires stronger isolation
- Mask or avoid indexing unnecessary personal data
- Monitor bulk retrieval, unusual query patterns, and denied-document spikes
Deletion and Reindexing
RAG systems need deletion workflows that cover more than source documents. When data must be removed, identify and delete related chunks, embeddings, cached context, derived evaluation examples, and logs where required by policy.
Evidence to Keep
- Data source approval records
- Indexing pipeline run history
- Document classification and access metadata
- Authorization checks for retrieval
- Deletion and reindexing job results
- Access reviews for vector database administrators

Start on Coursera →Bottom Line
C5-aligned RAG requires governance over the full data lifecycle: approve, classify, index, retrieve, authorize, monitor, retain, and delete. Treat embeddings and context as controlled data assets, not temporary implementation details.
